WTF?!? Friday: Party Planner

WTF kind of party hostess would expect you to belly up to the buffet for these eats?& WTF kind of stomach does it take to hold it all in? Find out where I found these finger [as in put your finger down your throat] foods tonight.

I know I've been a bit out of pocket this week. If your kids play ball in the summer, I know you've got my back. Busy, busy, busy - nary a moment to prepare a pb&j, let alone hit the feast for some quality time. I'll be back after 3 more trips to the ball park this weekend, and as many trips to the pool...are you having a diggy summer, too?

Kool Blast from the Past

First things first: WTF?!? was that pot-unlucky dish featured on Friday? Why it was raspberries, strawberries, peaches, grapes & fruit juices of choice jammed together in Good Housekeeping's Quick and Easy Cook Book's (c)'58 Jellied Fruit dish. It brings to mind haunted houses, with peeled grapes for eyeballs and strawberry goo for brains. And while it looks like something that would come right back up after ingestion, I'm pretty sure flavor-wise it would go down easy.

Today I've got something kool to share. My new-to-me smiley, plastic-y kool-aid pitcher set. My Gramps picked it up at a tag sale. $5 for the pitcher & 7 mischievous mugs. Yesterday Ben & Marge made magic, stirring up green powder, one very full cup of sugar and cold water just like it was 1974 all over again. And wouldn'tcha know it? The green powder turned blue, but it tastes just like cherries. Magic!I'll bet you can't drink kool-aid without smiling. What's your flavor?

WTF?! Friday - a quickie!

Put this in a pyrex for your next potluck and it's probably not going to be the first thing to go...

Quick 'n' Easy --- in name alone

Yesterday I had a pound of ground round in the icebox, and not an ounce of energy to fix dinner. So, I grabbed Good Housekeeping's Quick 'n' Easy Cook Book of time-saver dishes for today's busy woman, sure that I'd find a bevy of beefy options. You know what I got? I got squat.

Having the pound of round was the easy part, but it was paging through the cook book that it became clear that I hadn't been quick to pick up a 50's gal's pantry staples. Not having these ingredients on hand meant that I would come up empty handed in the dinner department:

  • canned minced clams
  • canned condensed green-pea soup
  • monosodium glutamate
  • canned roast beef
  • canned corned-beef hash
  • canned luncheon meat
  • canned apple slices
  • canned chicken fricassee
  • canned small white onions
Are we sure this shopping list wasn't the one to stock the nuclear fall-out shelter?

But I did have 2 peeled medium bananas, halved crosswise IN THE HALF-SHELL.

It's Tipsy Tuesday - Garden-Style!

{this guy wants your drink}

Green thumbs are totally optional when tending to this cocktail:

Planter's Punch
1 1/2oz dark rum
2 oz orange juice
3/4oz lemon juice
1/2oz lime juice
1/4 teaspoon grenadine

Shake. Strain. Pour over ice. Garnish with your choice of nature's bountiful fruits!

Warning. Do not drink and hoe. I'm just saying...

I'm Back! Let's Go Bananas!

Thanks for living in limbo while I live it up first with the mouse, then the beach, then with some friends & fam in Nebraska. I appreciate your loyalty. That's why I'm bringing you this AMAZING fruity treat from Good Housekeeping's Book of Salads (c)'58

How do they come up with "Those Fruitful Salads?" Wouldn'tcha like to know? Well, now you are mere moments away from the big reveal regarding the top banana. Cue the Bananaboat Song as I humbly present to you...Banana on the Half Shell
Remove half of banana peel lengthwise. Without removing fruit from remaining peel, cut banana into 1/2" slices. (Do not cut through peel.) Serve on "half shell," with fork.

Seriously.

Knock-knock.
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock-knock.
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock-knock.
Who's there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

No freaking kidding.

AWOL. 4Give?

I know I've been MIA lately. Can you find it in your retro heart to forgive a girl? We've had one more whirlwind weekend, which was honestly spent hanging out with friends and family and tea party-ing with Marge in the backyard. She's now officially 4.The ladies & gents were well-mannered and treated to cupcakes, tea sandwiches, fruity tarts and a run through the sprinkler. It was a lovely day for the loveliest little girl. Ever.

Now it's off for a quick trip to back to my roots in Nebraska for more quality time with friends and family in the cornhusker state. And I promise that I'll make good stepping back up to the pyrex when I return [I've also got that little etsy shop to keep building!]

Enjoy a jaunty start to your June!
